Did your education prepare you for your job today?
Well, not my first one on 100%, so I have three educations now:
-Master Degree of Management
-MBA, Rotterdam School of Management.
-Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CTI) – almost done!
Employers and business leaders today see the unfortunate gap between what students learn in universities and what they are actually expected to know in order to be job-ready. That was the trend after my first education as well. Also there is a weak correlation between education level and job performance.
Why is that?
During my MBA study, besides the various analytical, quantitative, qualitative and strategic disciplines, the focus was on Leadership, Communication, Interpersonal and Public Speaking, Problem Solving, Risk Management, recently Coaching was also introduced in several business schools. Basically we spent more time on studying those valued soft skills. While employers want candidates with higher levels of EQ, resilience, empathy, and integrity, those are rarely attributes that universities are focusing on in the curriculum. Today it is almost 2020 when the impact of AI and disruptive technology grows, so candidates who can perform tasks that machines cannot are becoming more valuable — and that underscores the growing importance of soft skills, which are hard for machines to emulate.
I wish those “people-skills” will be largely introduced not only in MBA programs, but in Bachelor and Master education, and even in high schools. I could not say that my Master degree didn’t help me, but the awareness of those soft skills in my earlier career stage would definitely help.
But still if you perfectly master both technical and soft skills, that would help you to receive the most attractive job offers with 6-figure salaries, bonuses, shares, company cars, etc., unless you get to know YOURSELF: your passion, your values, your purpose – you could still find yourself lost, unhappy and unfulfilled. I am so glad that more and more business schools introducing Coaching as part of their curriculum nowadays, and I am very proud of RSM is doing so last 5 years.
